Types of Mineral Makeup

Liquid Base

Minerals in a moisturizing liquid or cream base. Liquid base such as GloMinerals gloProtective Oil-Free Liquid Base - Golden Light provides light to medium coverage; heavier coverage can be achieved when used in conjunction with a pressed base. Ideal for all skin types.

Loose Base

Loose minerals, including Foundation w/Brush - Perfekt (SPF 20) and Face Colore Foundation Brush - Pass The Butter, both from Colorescience, offer sheer to medium coverage and a slightly ‘dewy’ finish. Ideal for normal to dry skin types.

Pressed Base

Minerals pressed into a compact without the aid of binders, such as Jane Iredale Pressed Base – Warm Amber, offer medium to heavy coverage and a matte finish. Ideal for normal to oily skin types.

Finishing Powder

Generally translucent, mineral finishing powders like Colorescience Face Colore Finishing Brush - Invisibly Matte are rice-based, oil-absorbing powders for use underneath or on top of foundation to minimize shine.

Blush

Mineral blushes rouge the complexion with highly-pigmented minerals available in pressed or loose form. Coverage is relatively sheer, providing a more subtle enhancement. Most companies provide a wide palette of colors and varied application forms; GloMinerals gloBlush – Hibiscus resembles a traditional compact, whereas Colorescience Face Colore Blush Brush - Bowl of Cherries uses a brush-on application.

Eye Shadows

Eye shadoew like Eye Shadow - Smoky Gray by Jane Iredale or Jane Iredale Eye Shadow – Shell are highly pigmented and versatile minerals available in pressed or loose powders. Most mineral eye shadows do not contain FD&C dyes, which make them suitable for use as eyeliner, lip liner, a tint for lipstick - and the list goes on and on!

Lip and Eye Liners

Lip liners and eye liners come in two different forms: pencils and powders. Minerals in the pencil form, such as Lip Pencil - Nude by Jane Iredale, are often mixed with natural oils and waxes. Minerals in powder form, such as Jane Iredale Cream to Powder Liner - Black Plus, are typically wax-free, and can be used with a wet brush for a more bold or liquid eye liner look.

Lipstick

Mineral lipsticks avoid FD&C dyes and synthetic preservatives. They typically feature moisturizing ingredients such as vitamin E and aloe vera, and often provide UV sun protection for the lips. Available in all of the finishes you’d expect (cream, frost, sheer), popular colors include Colorescience Lip Polish - Life’s A Peach and Jane Iredale LipColour – Bridget.

Hydrating Spray

Heavy-weighted water fortified with minerals, such as Colorescience Face Freshener - Be Still, work wonderfully to either set mineral makeup or freshen up throughout the day. Some formulas incorporate thermal spring water or sea water to enrich the skin with essential minerals.
